1 ♦ Didact. Qui désigne aussi bien le mâle que la femelle d'une espèce. Nom épicène masculin (ex.le rat), féminin (ex.la souris).
2 ♦ Dont la forme ne varie pas selon le genre. Adjectif (habile), pronom (tu) et substantif (enfant) épicènes.

● épicène adjectif (latin epicoenus, du grec epikoinos, possédé en commun) Se dit d'un nom qui a la même forme aux deux genres, correspondant aux deux sexes (par exemple un élève/une élève, un enfant/une enfant). Se dit d'un nom qui peut désigner indifféremment un mâle ou une femelle (par exemple la perdrix, le papillon).

REM. L'indication du sexe de l'être animé désigné doit alors être donnée par le contexte. Ex. : une gazelle mâle (Apollinaire).
2 Dont la forme ne varie pas selon le genre. || Adjectif, pronom épicène. || Les pronoms Je, tu, nous, les substantifs enfant, secrétaire sont épicènes. (On dit aussi qu'ils ont double genre, ou un genre commun).
